Kidney Vetch ‘Anthyllis vulneraria’

Showy yellow flowers in crowded heads and a hairy calyx. A long flowering period.  Anthyllis vulneraria common kidneyvetch or just kidney vetch, a medicinal plant native to Europe. The name vulneraria means “wound healer”. This spreading plant can cover bare ground in the right conditions.

Kidney vetch provides food for a number of beetle and moth larvae but, most importantly, is the sole food plant for the caterpillars of the small blue butterfly.  The flowers also provide nectar and pollen for beetles and bees. The flowers will make a yellow dye.
