Bring something a little different to summer wildlife planting with Allium flavum, an unusual species Allium producing airy clusters of golden-yellow flowers above slender stems.
Its nectar-bearing flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, while its lighter, more naturalistic habit makes it wonderful woven through sunny borders, grasses and gravel-style planting.
Joel says: “I really like this one because it doesn't have the heavy, formal look people sometimes associate with ornamental Alliums. Those loose yellow flowers work beautifully threaded through naturalistic planting — and the insects get plenty from them too.”

Allium flavum, commonly known as Yellow-Flowered Allium or Yellow Garlic, is an unusual species Allium producing loose clusters of small, bright golden-yellow flowers on slender upright stems in summer.
Rather than the large, densely packed purple globes associated with many ornamental Alliums, Allium flavum has a lighter, more delicate character. Its individual flowers are carried in airy umbels above narrow blue-green foliage, making it particularly attractive threaded through grasses, gravel planting, sunny borders and naturalistic wildlife gardens.
Native to parts of southern and central Europe and western Asia rather than Britain, this is a carefully selected ornamental species whose open, nectar-bearing flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
Alliums can be excellent plants for pollinators, and Allium flavum provides flowers during the summer months, helping to continue the succession of nectar-rich planting beyond the main spring bulb season.
Its many small flowers are grouped together in umbels, creating convenient feeding stations where visiting insects can move between individual blooms without travelling far.
We particularly like Allium flavum because it combines this wildlife value with a much looser and more naturalistic appearance than many of the highly bred ornamental Alliums.
It is not native to Britain, so we recommend it as supplementary forage alongside native summer wildflowers, rather than as a replacement for them.
Our approach remains simple: native where ecological relationships matter most; carefully chosen ornamentals where they genuinely provide useful additional forage.
Position: Full sun.
Soil: Best in reasonably fertile, free-draining soil. It is particularly well suited to sunny borders, gravel gardens and other areas that don't remain wet through winter.
Planting depth: Plant approximately 8–10cm deep.
Spacing: Approximately 10cm apart, or plant in loose groups and drifts for a more naturalistic effect.
Height: Usually around 30-50cm, depending on conditions.
Flowering period: Generally June to July.
Aftercare: Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulb can replenish its reserves.
Avoid excessively wet conditions while dormant.
The fine stems and loose yellow flower heads of Allium flavum make it particularly effective woven through other plants rather than planted as an isolated block.
Try repeating small groups through sunny meadow-style borders, ornamental grasses, gravel planting or amongst lower-growing wildlife-friendly perennials.
The yellow flowers can also provide a wonderful contrast to the blues, mauves and purples common among many summer nectar plants.
For wildlife gardens, combining several species with overlapping flowering periods helps maintain a more continuous supply of forage rather than relying on one short burst of flowers.
Allium flavum is being supplied as an ornamental garden bulb and should not be eaten. Keep bulbs away from children and pets likely to ingest them. Allium species can be particularly harmful to dogs and cats if eaten in sufficient quantities.
Wash hands after handling bulbs.
We carefully select bulbs that earn their place in a wildlife-friendly garden - prioritising native and naturalised species where ecological relationships matter most, alongside carefully chosen ornamentals that provide useful additional forage.
Orders are hand-picked for quality and packed in paper wherever suitable, with breathable net packaging used where necessary to keep bulbs in the best possible condition.
We work with specialist bulb growers and suppliers, including long-established local growers.
