Bold native flag iris for shallow shelves and wet edges. Superb habitat structure; vigorous, so basket and divide - best for medium to large ponds.
🪴 Peat-free & pesticide-free. More info below:From £5.95
Our native Yellow Flag is spectacular - large golden flowers in late spring/early summer and strong, upright sword leaves - but it’s also vigorous. In the right spot it gives superb emergence stems for dragonflies, edge cover for amphibians, and a clean, wild look on the shallow shelf. In small ponds, though, it can outgrow the space quickly and dominate planting if not contained. Expect 70-120+ cm in bloom with clumps that expand by short rhizomes; best managed in a mesh aquatic basket and thinned every few years. Set at the pond margin or very shallow shelf, with the crown at water level to 0-10(-15) cm under water, or in consistently damp ground just beyond the liner.
Where it thrives
Light: Full sun to light/partial shade (best flowering in sun)
Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / very shallow shelf; crown at water level or with 0-10(-15) cm water above the soil
Setting: Mid/back of the shelf for height and habitat. Best for medium to large ponds; not recommended for tiny barrels unless you’re happy to divide regularly.
Planting & care
Plant rhizomes in a mesh aquatic basket with peat-free aquatic/bog compost; top with washed grit to prevent float.
Remove spent stems after flowering; cut back old leaves in late winter/early spring.
Lift and divide every 2-3(-4) years in warm months to control footprint and refresh vigour.
Keep trimmings and soil out of natural watercourses; compost well away from drains/streams.
Safety (important & honest):
All irises can irritate skin/eyes and are toxic if ingested (people, pets, livestock). Wear gloves when dividing; do not ingest.
Truth-first wildlife note:
Provides good structure and emergence support; flowers are moderately used by bees/visitors. For stronger nectar provision, ring the shelf with single-flowered UK natives like Water Mint, Purple Loosestrife, Myosotis.
Small-pond advisory:
Yellow Flag is gorgeous but strong. In small ponds/barrels, choose white form ‘Alba’ or shorter natives for easier balance - or keep I. pseudacorus strictly basketed and divided.
Joel says…
“Gold flags and proper habitat - just give it space or a basket and a firm hand. Keep the crown at water level, split when it swells, and let it stand behind your lower natives.”
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are ordering perennials between the months of October and March, including aquatic plants, please be aware that this is the dormant phase for perennials, so your plants may arrive showing potentially little or no top growth at this stage, or can in some cases still have some old leaves from last year showing also. Please don't worry, as this is all quite normal. Once the weather warms up in spring, you will start to see fresh growth and activity! If you ever have any concerns at all, please just message the team on enquiries@wildyourgarden.com and we'll always do our best to help.
