A fresh twist on a pond classic, ‘Snowflakes’ carries the same soft, edging habit as Water Forget-me-not but with dainty white flowers over neat green foliage. Perfect for shallow shelves and damp pond collars, it knits the edge without blocking views and provides safe cover for froglets and emerging aquatic insects. Expect 15-25 cm in bloom with a gently spreading, clump-forming habit that’s easy to keep tidy. Best at the margin/bog zone with 0-5 cm of water above the soil, or in reliably damp ground just outside the liner. Lovely for barrel ponds where light colour lifts small spaces.
Where it thrives
Light: Full sun to light/partial shade (strongest flowering with decent light)
Moisture/Zone: Pond margin / bog; set crown at water level or with 0-5 cm water over the soil
Setting: Front-of-edge in front of taller marginals; ideal for barrels and small wildlife ponds
Planting & care
Plant in a mesh aquatic basket with peat-free aquatic compost; cap with washed grit to prevent float
Shear or trim lightly after the first flush to encourage fresh growth and a longer show
Divide every 2-3 years to refresh clumps and share plants along the edge
Allow only light self-seeding if you like a natural look; lift extras easily from gravel
Safety (important & honest):
Not for consumption; do not ingest. Wash hands after pond work. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses; never release garden plants into the wild.
Truth-first wildlife note:
Open, single flowers are accessible to small bees and hoverflies, while the low, knitting habit creates warm, shallow edge cover—vital for amphibians and emerging insects. Pair with other single-flowered natives to extend nectar through the season.
Joel says…
“Same lovely edge-softening as the blue form, but with bright little white stars. Basket it shallow, give it light, trim after the first bloom, and let it stitch a safe, wildlife-friendly rim.”
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are ordering perennials between the months of October and March, including aquatic plants, please be aware that this is the dormant phase for perennials, so your plants may arrive showing potentially little or no top growth at this stage, or can in some cases still have some old leaves from last year showing also. Please don't worry, as this is all quite normal. Once the weather warms up in spring, you will start to see fresh growth and activity! If you ever have any concerns at all, please just message the team on enquiries@wildyourgarden.com and we'll always do our best to help.
