The white form of Monk’s-hood brings cool, elegant drama to shade: handsome divided foliage and turban-shaped white blooms give height and light in woodland borders and hedgerow edges. For wildlife, aconites are a modest nectar source; long-tongued bumblebees will visit the hooded flowers in sheltered, dappled sites.

Planting & care

  • Position: Light/part shade; woodland edge or east/north beds.

  • Soil: Moist, humus-rich, well-drained (add leaf-mould/composted bark).

  • Depth/spacing: Plant 10-15 cm deep, 30-45 cm apart; avoid disturbing mature clumps.

  • Aftercare: Keep evenly moist in growth; leave seedheads if you like a wilder look. Divide only if congested.  WEAR GLOVES!

Status & provenance (the honest bit):
Parent species locally native in parts of western Britain; many garden plants are ancient naturalised. The white form is a horticultural variant. Our stock is nursery-grown, peat-free and pesticide-free - never wild-dug.

SAFETY (read BEFORE buying/planting):

  • ALL parts highly poisonous to humans & animals; do not ingest.

  • Wear gloves (and ideally long sleeves) when planting, dividing or cutting back.

  • Avoid sap contact with cuts/eyes; wash hands/tools after handling.

  • NOT for households with curious pets/children or for cut-flower use.

  • If exposure/ingestion occurs: seek medical help and take the plant label.

Joel says…
“Used with respect, white Monk’s-hood is stunning in shade. Plant it deep, mulch annually, and site it where it won’t be handled much. ALWAYS with gloves. As ever, peat-free and ready to thrive.”

Why Wild Your Garden?
Unlike mass-produced plants from commercial growers, our wildflowers come from small, peat-free, pesticide-free family nurseries that share our ethos. These growers use no herbicides, ensuring plants are safe for wildlife from the moment they arrive. Joel has used these trusted growers for 20+ years in his wildlife landscaping projects, so you can be confident they’re tried, tested, and genuinely wildlife-friendly. By buying from us, you’re also supporting independent growers who put nature first.
