From £5.95
A compact, white-flowered marsh marigold for shallow pond shelves and bog-edge planting. From early spring, neat cupped blooms (often with a soft greenish eye) open above glossy heart-shaped leaves to wake the pond after winter. Ideal at 0-5 cm of water over the crown or in consistently damp soil; forms tidy clumps 20-35 cm tall and can self-seed lightly in the right spot. Excellent early resource for hoverflies and small bees while providing low cover for emerging amphibians.
Native status: Non-native (white form; garden-safe, non-invasive). For the UK native yellow species, see Caltha palustris.
Where it thrives
Light: Full sun to light/partial shade
Moisture/Zone: Shallow marginal (0-5 cm) or damp bog-edge; mineral subsoil/loam topped with washed gravel; do not dry out
Setting: Pond shelf front, barrel-pond lip, damp border pockets; pairs well with water forget-me-not, lesser spearwort, and sedges
Planting & care
Plant into a small nursery basket or directly into the marginal shelf/bog bed with peat-free loam; firm and top with gravel
Keep evenly moist; deadhead after main flush to encourage a lighter rebloom and to limit self-seeding if desired
Divide clumps in early spring or after flowering to maintain vigour
Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only - do not ingest any part. Fresh sap may irritate skin; wash hands after gardening. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.
Truth-first wildlife note:
Best in cool, consistently moist conditions; leaf scorch can occur if allowed to dry out in full sun. For deeper shelves (>10 cm), choose a true deep-water marginal instead.
Joel says…
“Set it right at the front of the shelf where you can see those early blooms. A little morning sun and steady moisture and it sings.”
