Verbena bonariensis, often known as purpletop vervain, is a tall, airy perennial that brings movement, colour and outstanding wildlife value to the garden.
From mid to late summer, clusters of soft purple flowers sit on slender, see-through stems, creating a light, floating effect that weaves effortlessly through borders and meadow-style planting. Bees, butterflies and other pollinators flock to it in huge numbers, making it one of the most reliable late-season nectar plants you can grow.
Despite its delicate appearance, Verbena bonariensis is a tough and adaptable plant. It thrives in sunny, well-drained positions and often self-seeds gently, allowing it to find its own place in the garden without becoming invasive.
A favourite in wildlife-friendly gardens for its long flowering season, structure and sheer insect appeal.
