Tulipa ‘Purple Doll’ - Elegant Purple Lily-Flowered Tulip for Spring Borders

An elegant lily-flowered tulip producing rich purple-magenta flowers with long, pointed petals on slender stems around 40–50cm tall.

We've grown Tulipa ‘Purple Doll’ here at Wild Your Garden amongst yellow Tulipa sylvestris in naturalistic meadow-style planting beneath deciduous trees, where the two make a beautiful spring combination. Its simple, accessible flowers can also provide useful additional forage for visiting insects.

“We've grown this amongst Wild Tulips here and I've been really impressed by it. Weaving them through existing planting, rather than putting them in formal blocks.”  Photos show these tulips in this setting.

Additional Info

Tulipa ‘Purple Doll’ is an exceptionally elegant lily-flowered tulip, producing rich purple-magenta flowers with long, pointed petals that curve gently outwards as they open.

Unlike the heavy, upright goblets associated with many traditional tulips, ‘Purple Doll’ has a lighter, more graceful appearance. The flowers become increasingly open in suitable weather, creating a slender, almost star-like silhouette above fresh green foliage.

Growing to approximately 40-50cm tall, it can be used very differently from the miniature botanical tulips in our collection. Rather than being confined to rockeries and containers, ‘Purple Doll’ has enough height to weave through meadow-style planting, naturalistic borders, beneath deciduous trees and amongst other spring bulbs and emerging perennials.

We've grown it here at Wild Your Garden amongst Wild Tulip, Tulipa sylvestris, where its rich purple flowers provide a striking contrast against the yellow species tulips and surrounding naturalistic planting.

Wildlife value

‘Purple Doll’ is a cultivated ornamental tulip and isn't native to Britain, so we've chosen it for our collection for a very specific reason.

Its lily-flowered form is relatively simple rather than densely doubled, and the petals open sufficiently to leave the centre of the flower accessible to visiting insects. It can therefore offer additional spring forage, while bringing height and colour into naturalistic planting.

We wouldn't compare its ecological importance with that of a native wildflower, nor suggest planting ornamental tulips instead of native spring flowers. But in a wildlife garden already rich in native and long-established plants, accessible single-flowered ornamentals can help broaden the succession of available flowers.

That's exactly the balance we're looking for:

Native where ecological relationships matter most; carefully chosen ornamentals where they genuinely provide useful additional forage.

Planting & care

Position: Full sun is ideal, although light shade beneath deciduous trees can also work well where the bulbs receive plenty of spring light before the canopy closes overhead.

Soil: Fertile to moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid ground that remains persistently waterlogged.

Planting depth: Plant approximately 10-15cm deep, with the pointed end upwards.

Spacing: Approximately 10cm apart. For naturalistic planting, avoid evenly spaced rows and instead scatter bulbs through existing planting in loose groups and drifts.

Height: Approximately 40-50cm.

Flowering: Generally April into May, depending on location and seasonal conditions.

After flowering: Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. While the leaves remain green, they are replenishing the bulb's reserves for the following season.

Where bulbs are intended to remain in the ground, choose the sunniest, best-drained position available and avoid excessive summer irrigation during dormancy.

A tulip for naturalistic planting

One of the reasons we've included ‘Purple Doll’ is that we've seen first-hand how well it can work outside the traditional formal tulip display.

Here at Wild Your Garden, we've grown it through an informal meadow-style area beneath deciduous trees, mixed amongst the yellow flowers of Tulipa sylvestris.

The combination demonstrates something we particularly enjoy about wildlife-friendly gardening: an ornamental doesn't necessarily need its own isolated block of colour. Used carefully, it can be woven through a more naturalistic community of plants, adding another layer without dominating the planting around it.

The contrast is particularly effective in spring - the rich purple-magenta flowers of ‘Purple Doll’ appearing amongst the clear yellow Wild Tulips, grasses and emerging meadow vegetation.

For anyone who likes tulips but doesn't necessarily want their garden to look like a formal bedding display, it's a very different way to use them.

SAFETY NOTE

Tulips are not edible. The bulbs and other parts of the plant can be harmful if eaten, and handling tulip bulbs may cause skin irritation in some people. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin and keep bulbs away from children and pets likely to eat them.

Why Wild Your Garden?

We carefully select bulbs that earn their place in a wildlife-friendly garden - prioritising native and naturalised species where ecological relationships matter most, alongside carefully chosen ornamentals that provide useful additional forage.

Orders are hand-picked for quality and packed in paper wherever suitable, with breathable net packaging used where necessary to keep bulbs in the best possible condition.

We work with specialist bulb growers and suppliers, including long-established local growers.
