Tulipa humilis ‘Eastern Star’ - Jewel-Coloured Botanical Tulip for Naturalising

A jewel-like miniature botanical tulip with rich magenta to rosy-purple flowers opening to reveal golden-yellow markings around a contrasting dark centre.

Growing only around 10–15cm tall, Tulipa pulchella ‘Eastern Star’ is ideal for sunny rock gardens, gravel planting, raised beds, border edges and containers. Its simple, open flowers can also provide accessible additional forage for visiting spring insects.

Joel says…

“These small botanical tulips are ideal for the sunny, free-draining places where bigger border plants can look out of scale. I'd put them amongst gravel, stones and low-growing plants and use several bulbs together so you get little pockets of colour. Most importantly, don't cut the foliage off after flowering - let it die back naturally so the bulb can replenish itself for next year.”

Overview
Additional Info

Tulipa pulchella ‘Eastern Star’ is a beautiful miniature botanical tulip, producing jewel-like flowers close to the ground in spring. Rich magenta to rosy-purple petals open in sunshine to reveal a striking contrasting centre, with a golden-yellow zone surrounding a dark violet-purple eye.

Growing to only around 10-15cm tall, ‘Eastern Star’ is very different in character from the tall, highly bred tulips familiar from formal spring displays. Its compact stature and open, star-shaped flowers make it particularly attractive amongst gravel, stones and low-growing plants, where its intricate colouring can be appreciated at close quarters.

It is ideal for sunny rock gardens, gravel gardens, raised beds, border edges and containers, and looks especially effective planted in small informal groups.

Wildlife value

‘Eastern Star’ is not native to Britain, and its place in our wildlife-friendly bulb collection is as a carefully selected ornamental rather than as a substitute for native spring flowers.

Its value lies primarily in its simple, open flower structure. In suitable sunny weather the flowers spread widely, exposing the pollen-bearing parts of the flower and making them accessible to visiting insects.

Planted alongside native and long-established spring-flowering plants, botanical tulips such as ‘Eastern Star’ can therefore contribute useful additional seasonal forage while bringing colour and diversity to sunny, free-draining parts of the garden.

Our approach remains simple:

Native where ecological relationships matter most; carefully chosen ornamentals where they genuinely provide useful additional forage.

Planting & care

Position: Full sun. A warm, sunny position encourages the flowers to open fully and display their beautifully marked centres.

Soil: Well-drained soil is essential. Gravelly, sandy and other free-draining soils are particularly suitable, while persistently wet or waterlogged ground should be avoided.

Planting depth: Plant approximately 10cm deep, with the pointed end of the bulb facing upwards.

Spacing: Approximately 5-10cm apart. For a naturalistic effect, plant bulbs in loose groups rather than straight rows.

Height: Approximately 10-15cm.

Flowering: Spring, generally around April, although timing will vary with location and seasonal weather.

After flowering: Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. While the leaves remain green they continue to photosynthesise, replenishing the bulb and helping it prepare for the following year's growth.

In a sunny position with excellent drainage, these little botanical tulips are well suited to being left in the ground to return in subsequent years.

A little tulip with wild ancestry

The name Tulipa pulchella has long been used horticulturally for these diminutive tulips, although modern botanical classification places the wild plant within Tulipa humilis.

Kew's Plants of the World Online currently recognises Tulipa humilis var. pulchella, with a natural range extending from Türkiye through parts of western Asia to northern Iran.

The plants behind these little botanical cultivars come from environments very different from a damp British border, which helps explain their preference for sunshine and excellent drainage.

Their compact growth and relatively simple flowers also give them a wonderfully natural character compared with many of the much larger tulips developed for formal garden displays.

SAFETY NOTE

Tulips are not edible. The bulbs and other parts of the plant can be harmful if eaten, and handling tulip bulbs may cause skin irritation in some people. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin and keep bulbs away from children and pets likely to eat them.
