Tulipa ‘Little Beauty’ - Dwarf Botanical Tulip - Spring Pollinator Bulbs

A tiny botanical tulip with an astonishing flower. Tulipa ‘Little Beauty’ produces rich crimson-pink to magenta blooms that open widely in sunshine to reveal a deep violet-blue centre surrounded by a contrasting pale halo.

Growing only around 10–15cm tall, it's perfect for sunny gravel gardens, rockeries, raised beds, border edges and containers. Its simple, open flowers can also provide accessible additional forage for visiting spring insects.

Joel says…

“These little botanical tulips are brilliant amongst stones, gravel and low-growing plants where you can actually see them. ‘Little Beauty’ is tiny, so don't bury it behind taller border plants. Give it plenty of sun and really good drainage, plant several together in a loose group, and leave the foliage alone after flowering so the bulbs can build themselves back up for next year.”

Additional Info

There are tulips that shout from the back of a border - and then there is Tulipa ‘Little Beauty’, a tiny botanical tulip whose extraordinary flowers reward getting down for a closer look.

Growing to only around 10-15cm tall, ‘Little Beauty’ produces jewel-like flowers in spring. The petals are rich crimson-pink to magenta, but when sunshine opens the flower fully, an extraordinary centre is revealed: a deep violet-blue heart surrounded by a contrasting pale to white halo.

It's one of those plants that can look almost entirely different depending on the weather. The flowers close during dull conditions and at night, showing predominantly their pink outer colouring, before opening into wide stars in sunshine and revealing that remarkable centre.

Its diminutive size makes it particularly suited to sunny gravel gardens, rockeries, raised beds, border edges and containers, where it won't disappear amongst taller planting.

Wildlife value

‘Little Beauty’ isn't native to Britain, nor would we put it in the same ecological league as one of our native wildflowers.

What makes it interesting for a wildlife-friendly garden is its simple, open flower structure.

When the flowers spread open in sunshine, the reproductive parts are exposed rather than buried beneath layers of petals, allowing visiting insects to reach them. We therefore see it as useful additional spring forage, planted alongside rather than instead of our native spring flowers.

That's exactly the principle behind the ornamentals we choose for Wild Your Garden:

Native where ecological relationships matter most; carefully chosen ornamentals where they genuinely provide useful additional forage.

Planting & care

Position: Full sun is ideal - not least because sunshine encourages those extraordinary flowers to open fully.

Soil: Fertile to moderately fertile and, most importantly, well drained.

Planting depth: Around 10-15cm deep, pointed end upwards.

Spacing: Approximately 5-10cm apart, or plant several bulbs in informal groups for a more natural effect.

Height: Approximately 10-15cm.

Flowering: Usually April into May, depending on location and seasonal conditions. Specialist bulb sources place its flowering in mid-spring.

After flowering: Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally rather than cutting or tying it while still green. This lets the leaves continue photosynthesising and replenishing the bulb for the following year.

Given the right sunny, well-drained conditions, ‘Little Beauty’ can be left to establish and increase, making it much more interesting for naturalistic planting than tulips grown purely as disposable seasonal bedding.

Small tulip, rather spectacular ancestry

The botanical tulips are a lovely reminder of just how diverse Tulipa was before centuries of horticultural breeding gave us the enormous garden tulips we're familiar with today.

‘Little Beauty’ is associated horticulturally with Tulipa humilis - appropriately, humilis means low-growing - a genuinely wild tulip whose natural range extends from south-eastern Türkiye through Iran and neighbouring regions as far east as Afghanistan.

SAFETY NOTE

Like other tulips, Tulipa ‘Little Beauty’ is not edible. Tulip bulbs and plant material can be harmful if eaten, and handling bulbs may cause skin irritation in some people. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin and keep bulbs away from children and pets likely to eat them.

Why Wild Your Garden?

We carefully select bulbs that earn their place in a wildlife-friendly garden - prioritising native and naturalised species where ecological relationships matter most, alongside carefully chosen ornamentals that provide useful additional forage.

Orders are hand-picked for quality and packed in paper wherever suitable, with breathable net packaging used where necessary to keep bulbs in the best possible condition.

We work with specialist bulb growers and suppliers, including long-established local growers.
