A grass with glamour! Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia cespitosa) is one of those quietly spectacular natives that holds a garden together - shimmering in the breeze, catching low sunlight, and offering movement where other plants stand still. It forms neat, fountain-like clumps of fine, evergreen foliage topped with airy, golden seedheads that sparkle in summer and glow into winter.
Where it thrives
Light: Sun or dappled shade
Soil: Moist, rich, or damp grassland soils; tolerates occasional flooding
Setting: Meadows, pond margins, woodland edges, and wildlife banks
Why it matters
Its seedheads are a magnet for hoverflies and small insects, while the dense clumps shelter frogs, beetles, and overwintering butterflies. The fine leaves are even used as nesting material by wrens and robins - it’s a grass that gives back.
Garden use
Perfect for softening the edges of ponds or paths, or adding texture to a wildflower meadow. Leave the seedheads standing through winter - they’re stunning frosted and provide vital cover for wildlife.
Folklore & Notes
Known to some old country gardeners as Tussock Grass, this species was once cut and dried to stuff mattresses or line animal shelters - nature’s original insulation! Its Latin name cespitosa means “forming turfs or tufts” - not “cesspit,” thankfully.
Joel says…
“Grasses like this bring a garden to life - you can hear it move, you can see it catch the light, and wildlife loves it. A perfect native for structure and sound.”
