“This is one of those quietly brilliant designs - simple, adaptable and genuinely useful. I really like the removable divider, because it lets the box respond to the bats rather than forcing the bats to fit the box. Put it up high, give it time, and let nature decide.”

Our Traditional Bat Box is a simple, well-proven design that provides a safe and sheltered roost for some of the UK’s most commonly encountered bats, particularly Common Pipistrelles and Soprano Pipistrelles.
These small bats naturally roost in narrow crevices - beneath loose bark, behind timber cladding, or within cracks in old buildings - and this box is designed to closely replicate those conditions. Precision-cut FSC® certified plywood panels create a dry, draught-free interior, while the grooved landing ladder continues inside the box to help bats move easily once they’ve entered.
The box is supplied with two parallel internal crevices, but one of its most useful features is flexibility. By simply removing the roof (secured with a single screw), the internal divider can slide out, converting the box into a single larger chamber. This makes it suitable for bats that prefer a more open roosting space, such as noctules, allowing the box to adapt to different species and situations.
A 20mm entrance slot provides easy access for bats while discouraging birds, and the close-fitting panels help retain warmth - an important factor for energy-saving bats, particularly during the breeding season. The box is lightweight and easy to fix to walls or trees, with two rear fixing holes for secure installation.
Bat boxes should be mounted as high as possible, ideally in a sheltered, sunny position, and best results are often achieved by installing several boxes facing different directions to provide a range of temperature options. Occupation can take time - sometimes several years - but signs such as droppings beneath the entrance, staining on the box, or soft chittering sounds on warm evenings suggest that bats have moved in.
All bats and bat roosts are legally protected in the UK. This box should only be opened for inspection or cleaning by a licensed individual, and disturbance during occupation is not permitted.
