Purpose-built, quietly effective, and rooted in real woodland ecology, this Tawny Owl Nest Box has been designed to replicate the natural tree cavities these iconic owls depend on.
Tawny Owls are the UK’s most widespread owl species, favouring mature deciduous and mixed woodland, as well as large gardens and parks where old trees and cover remain. In natural settings they nest inside hollow trunks or large broken branches - features that are increasingly scarce as veteran trees are lost or made “safe”.
Rather than a traditional square box, this design takes the form of a deep, tubular cavity. While it may look unusual, it closely mirrors the hollow limbs Tawny Owls naturally choose and is widely recognised as one of the most successful designs for this species.
Constructed from precision-cut FSC® certified exterior-grade plywood, the box is treated with a non-toxic, water-based preservative to ensure long-term durability while remaining safe for wildlife. A well-drained floor helps prevent damp build-up, and a robust access hatch at the base allows for occasional cleaning outside the breeding season. The hatch is made from 100% recycled plastic and secured with stainless steel screws for longevity.
Multiple fixing options - including screw holes and strap slots at both ends - allow the box to be safely installed on large trees without causing unnecessary damage.
Although Tawny Owls are still relatively widespread, suitable nesting cavities are often the limiting factor in otherwise good habitat. Where woodland lacks old or damaged trees, artificial nest sites can make a real difference to breeding success.
This box is not intended for close garden viewing. Tawny Owls are famously defensive around their nests, and providing them with a quiet, undisturbed site away from regular human activity is essential.
Used appropriately, this nest box can support long-term owl occupancy and successful breeding in suitable woodland landscapes.

Selected for Wild Your Garden with guidance from Joel Ashton, this nest box reflects a habitat-led approach - providing wildlife with what they actually need, rather than forcing species into generic solutions.
