Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’, commonly known as Summer Snowflake, is an elegant spring-flowering bulb producing arching stems of large, nodding white bell-shaped flowers, each beautifully marked with green at the tips.
Despite its common name, Summer Snowflake usually flowers in spring rather than summer, extending the familiar snowdrop-like appearance into a later part of the season. ‘Gravetye Giant’ is a particularly vigorous, taller form, reaching around 50-60cm in suitable conditions.
Its fresh green foliage and graceful white flowers are especially effective in informal drifts beside ponds and streams, through damp grass, at woodland edges and in moisture-retentive borders.
Once established in suitable conditions, plants can gradually form increasingly impressive clumps, making this a wonderful bulb for naturalistic and wildlife-friendly planting.
The flowers of Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’ provide nectar and pollen for visiting bees, adding another flowering opportunity to the spring garden.
Its particular value within a wildlife-friendly planting scheme is also where it grows well: moist ground, pond margins and damp areas can support a wonderfully diverse plant community when planted sympathetically.
Rather than treating the edge of a wildlife pond as a narrow ring of conventional aquatic plants, Summer Snowflake can help blur the transition between water, damp ground and the wider garden.
Combine it with suitable native pondside and damp-ground flowers to create a longer succession of blooms and a more structurally varied habitat.
Our approach remains: native where ecological relationships matter most; carefully chosen ornamentals where they genuinely provide useful additional forage.
Position: Full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Fertile, moisture-retentive soil is ideal. ‘Gravetye Giant’ particularly suits ground that remains cool and damp, making it an excellent choice around ponds, streams and damp woodland edges.
Planting depth: Approximately 10cm deep.
Spacing: Approximately 8-10cm apart, or space more loosely when creating naturalistic drifts.
Height: Approximately 50-60cm in suitable conditions.
Flowering period: Typically April to May, depending on location and seasonal conditions.
Aftercare: Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally after flowering. This enables the bulb to replenish its energy reserves for the following year.
Established clumps can be divided when they become congested.
‘Gravetye Giant’ is an especially useful bulb for those slightly awkward areas of a wildlife garden where the soil is too moisture-retentive for many conventional bulbs but isn't permanently submerged.
Plant it through the upper margins around a wildlife pond, beside a stream or drainage area, through moisture-retentive grass or at the edge of deciduous woodland.
For the most natural appearance, avoid evenly spaced rows. Instead, plant bulbs in loose groups and irregular drifts, allowing some groups to merge as they establish.
It can work beautifully alongside suitable moisture-loving plants such as marsh marigold, ragged robin, cuckooflower and native primroses, creating a changing succession of flowers through spring.
Although Summer Snowflake is particularly well suited to damp and moisture-retentive ground, bulbs should be planted in soil rather than permanently submerged in pond water.
It is ideal for the upper pond margin and surrounding damp ground, rather than the submerged planting shelves used for aquatic plants.
Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’ is supplied as an ornamental bulb and should not be eaten. Keep bulbs away from children and pets likely to ingest them, and wash hands after handling.
We carefully select bulbs that earn their place in a wildlife-friendly garden — prioritising native and naturalised species where ecological relationships matter most, alongside carefully chosen ornamentals that provide useful additional forage.
Orders are hand-picked for quality and packed in paper wherever suitable, with breathable net packaging used where necessary to keep bulbs in the best possible condition.
We work with specialist bulb growers and suppliers, including long-established local growers.
