Additional Info

For a bright, graphic accent at the pond rim, Star Grass tops slim green stems with striking white “petals” - actually bracts - around a tiny flower cluster, giving a crisp, starry look from summer into early autumn. A sedge-relative from warmer climates, it thrives in consistently moist to wet soil at the pond collar or bog garden (it’s not a submerged plant). Expect around 25-50 cm in bloom with a clump-forming habit that stays tidy and upright - ideal in containers or small bog pockets where you want clean contrast beside softer natives. In colder areas it benefits from winter protection or being grown in a pot you can move to shelter.

Where it thrives

  • Light: Full sun to light/partial shade (whitest bracts in good light)

  • Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / bog in moist-wet soil; keep the crown just above water level (do not submerge)

  • Setting: Front/mid rim, containers kept evenly damp, and mixed bog pockets for a modern, high-contrast accent

Planting & care

  • Plant in peat-free bog/pond-edge compost; mulch or use a moisture-retentive top layer to keep roots wet

  • Deadhead old star heads to keep plants clean and prolong display

  • Divide every 2-3 years in spring to refresh clumps or pot-on container plants

  • Winter: In colder regions, give a sheltered, well-drained but moist spot, add a dry mulch around crowns, or overwinter pots frost-free and just damp

Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only - do not ingest. Wash hands after gardening. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses; never release garden plants into the wild.

Truth-first wildlife note:
Those showy white “stars” are bracts; the true flowers are small and largely wind-pollinated, so nectar value is limited. The plant still offers low cover and perches at the warm edges - pair with UK-native, single-flowered marginals to provide strong nectar through the season.

Joel says…
“Use Star Grass as your crisp highlight - white stars above green blades. Keep it evenly wet at the rim, deadhead to stay sharp, and give it winter shelter if you’re chilly.”

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are ordering perennials between the months of October and March, including aquatic plants, please be aware that this is the dormant phase for perennials, so your plants may arrive showing potentially little or no top growth at this stage, or can in some cases still have some old leaves from last year showing also. Please don't worry, as this is all quite normal. Once the weather warms up in spring, you will start to see fresh growth and activity! If you ever have any concerns at all, please just message the team on enquiries@wildyourgarden.com and we'll always do our best to help.
