Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica) - Wildlife-Friendly Native (Peat-Free Super Plugs & 9cm Pots)

A classic of damp meadows and stream margins, Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica) carries neat sprays of white, button-centred daisies over fine, aromatic foliage. Unlike common yarrow, it prefers a little moisture in the soil, making it perfect for those not-too-dry spots where many wildflowers flag in summer.

Wildlife value: The flat, open blooms offer easy access to solitary bees, bumblebees, hoverflies and small beetles, supporting pollination and a wider beneficial-insect food web. Flowering runs from early summer into autumn if you deadhead, keeping the buffet open in the late-season gap.

Where it thrives:

• Sun to light dappled shade

• Moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils (tolerates ordinary ground if not baked)

• Meadow-style borders, pond margins (in ground, not in water), orchard edges, cottage gardens

Planting & care:
Plant 30-40 cm apart. Keep evenly moist while establishing, then water only in drought. Deadhead for repeat flushes or leave a few seedheads for winter structure. Spreads slowly by short rhizomes - easy to manage with a spring spade-edge; divide every 2–3 years to refresh clumps.

Folklore note: The name “sneezewort” comes from its historic use as a snuff to induce sneezing—an old remedy from yarrow’s long herbal history.
