Wood Spurge (Euphorbia amygdaloides) - Wildlife-Friendly Native Woodland Groundcover (Peat-Free, Pesticide-Free Super Plugs & 9cm Pots)

Bold structure, early blooms, and wildlife value - even in dry shade. A native evergreen that brings architecture to shady spaces. Wood Spurge produces striking lime-green flower bracts in early spring, providing important nectar for emerging hoverflies and solitary bees. Its rosettes of glossy green leaves persist year-round, offering cover for beetles, frogs, and other ground dwellers. Thrives in dry, tricky areas where other plants give up. Perfect for: under trees, dry shade, and bringing structure and life to woodland-style planting. All of our plants are grown by small specialist growers here in the UK - people who are just as passionate about wildlife gardening as we are. Every plant is peat-free, pesticide-free, carefully raised, and sent directly to you with wildlife in mind. By choosing this plant, you’re not just supporting pollinators - you’re supporting the people who grow for the good of nature.

Additional Info

Euphorbia amygdaloides is a true woodland-edge specialist: fresh evergreen foliage through the year and a long show of chartreuse bracts in early spring when shady borders are short on colour and nectar. Wildlife value is modest but meaningful - the open nectaries are used by hoverflies, solitary bees and other beneficial insects at a key time, while the plant itself provides cover and a calm backdrop for wilder spring flowers.

Where it thrives

  • Part to full shade (tolerates dry shade once established)

  • Well-drained to moderately moist, humus-rich soils; add leaf-mould for best results

  • Underplanting for shrubs/trees, hedgerows, shady cottage borders, wildlife strips

Planting & care

  • Space 30-40 cm apart. Water to establish, then it copes well with dry shade.

  • Shear spent bracts after flowering to keep plants tidy and encourage fresh growth.

  • Spreads by short rhizomes and some self-seeding: easy to manage by lifting stray shoots or edging once a year.

  • Evergreen; mulch annually with leaf-mould/composted bark.

Safety (important & honest):
All euphorbias have milky latex sap that can irritate skin and eyes; wear gloves, avoid contact, and keep clippings away from pets/livestock. Do not ingest.

Truth-first wildlife note:
This is not a top nectar “magnet” like marjoram or scabious, but it’s valuable early in shade and excellent for structure, helping host a wider community of insects.

Joel says…
“For woodland edge and dry shade, Wood Spurge is a banker - evergreen structure, lime bracts in spring, and it helps hoverflies along when little else is going. Give it leaf-mould, trim after flowering, and let it knit a calm, wildlife-friendly carpet. As always, peat-free and pesticide-free.”
