Additional Info

A classic of chalk grassland and sunny verges, Wild Marjoram (Origanum vulgare) is one of the most reliable wildlife plants for mid- to late-season forage. Its branching heads of tiny pink-mauve flowers provide easy access for honeybees, solitary bees, bumblebees, butterflies (Common Blue, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, etc.), and hoverflies - just when many earlier flowers are fading.

It’s also wonderfully tough and drought-tolerant. Give it full sun and well-drained soil (poor, chalky, or gravelly is perfect) and it will knit into meadows, steppe-style plantings, herb borders, pots, or green roof edges. The aromatic foliage releases a warm oregano scent and can be harvested lightly for the kitchen - or left to the pollinators to keep the flowers coming.

Low maintenance and long-lived, Wild Marjoram will self-seed modestly, creating natural drifts without becoming a nuisance. Cut back spent stems in late autumn or early spring; on very poor soils, a light mulch of leaf-mould helps it along.

Joel says...
“Wild Marjoram is one of my go-to late nectar plants. It’s tough, fragrant, and the flowers are buzzing for weeks. Tuck it into sunny, well-drained spots - chalk banks, meadow edges, even gravel - and it’ll just get on with it. As always, peat-free and raring to go.”

Honest herb note:
Edible as a traditional oregano herb, but if you’re gardening for wildlife, harvest lightly or grow a second clump for the kitchen so the flowers keep feeding insects. Our plants are peat-free and grown without pesticides.

Although there is a minimum order requirement of 8 plugs when purchasing specific species, if selecting our Super Plug Bespoke Pack, you can select up to 4 species of your choice from our given list to make up a 16 pack (or greater), allowing you a wider choice of plug species if 8 of one is too many. Find the link to our Super Plug Bespoke Pack here!

These SUPER PLUG specimens are available in 8 pack, 16 pack, 32 pack and 48 pack. The 9CM POTS are available individually.

They're both ready to be shipped to you in a few days.

If you need ANY advice on planting or suitable plants for a specific area, please remember that as a Wild Your Garden customer you're entitled to free professional and tailored advice from our founder, Joel.
