Additional Info

Common Vervain (Verbena officinalis) brings airy texture and weeks of bloom to sunny, well-drained places. Its slender, branching sprays carry tiny lilac flowers that open in sequence through summer, offering reliable top-up forage for small solitary bees and hoverflies when many borders run low.

Tough and unfussy, it thrives on poor, chalky or sandy soils, suits gravel/steppe-style plantings, herb borders and meadow edges, and partners beautifully with Marjoram, Small Scabious, Yarrow and light grasses. Short-lived but self-seeds lightly, so it weaves a natural, informal tapestry year to year.

Where it thrives

  • Full sun

  • Well-drained, low- to moderate-fertility soils; drought-tolerant once established

  • Meadow edge, gravel garden, herb border, wildlife strip, pots with gritty mix

Planting & care
Plant 25–30 cm apart; water to establish, then keep on the dry side. Deadhead to prolong flowering or leave some seed for gentle self-sowing. Cut back in late autumn or leave stems for winter structure and tidy in spring.

Name note:
Often sold as “Vervain”; the correct botanical is Verbena officinalis (not “Vervain officinalis”).

Folklore & heritage:
Revered since antiquity - linked with Druids and Romans, used as a ceremonial “holy herb”. Today we value it for pollinators and natural texture, not medicine.

Joel says…
“For hot, well-drained spots that need subtle movement and steady insect traffic, Vervain is perfect. Let a few seedlings shuffle themselves about and it looks effortlessly natural. As always, peat-free and ready to thrive.”
