Thrift (Armeria maritima) - Wildlife-Friendly Native (Peat-Free Super Plugs & 9cm Pots)

A classic of clifftops, dunes and salt-sprayed turf, Thrift forms neat mounds of grassy leaves topped with wiry stems and cheerful, pollen-rich heads. It’s tailor-made for dry, poor soils and thrives where other plants sulk: coastal gardens, gravel drives, rockeries, raised beds and even green roofs. In borders it makes a tidy edging plant that hums with insect life on warm days.

Where it thrives

• Full sun

• Well-drained soil: sandy, gritty or chalky; tolerates salt & wind

• Rock/gravel gardens, path edges, pots, walls, coastal lawns, green roofs

Planting & care
Space 20-30 cm apart in gritty, free-draining soil. Water to establish, then keep on the dry side. Deadhead/shear lightly after the first flush to encourage repeat bloom. Avoid heavy feeding and winter waterlogging. Divide every few years to refresh older clumps.

Honest wildlife note:
Small, open flower heads offer easy access to bees and hoverflies throughout spring and early summer - compact plant, big value for small spaces.
