Self Heal (Prunella vulgaris) - Wildlife-Friendly Native (Peat-Free Super Plugs & 9cm Pots)

Self Heal (a.k.a. Heal-all) dots lawns and meadows with neat purple flower spikes for months, offering easy-access nectar just where people most notice it - underfoot and along paths. It’s tough, low-growing and semi-evergreen, knitting into grass or forming a light groundcover in sun to light shade. Pollinators work the flowers from early summer well into autumn, especially in nectar lawns where mowing is relaxed.

Where it thrives

• Full sun to part shade

• Most soils, best well-drained and not overly rich

• Meadow lawns, orchard edges, path edges, rock/gravel gardens, underplanting

Planting & care

• Plant 20-30 cm apart; water to establish.

• For nectar lawns: mow high (7-10 cm) and less often; leave patches to flower, then mow after seed set.

• In borders: trim after first flush to keep compact and encourage repeat flowers.

• Spreads gently by stolons and seed - easy to edit with a hand fork. Drought-tolerant once established; avoid waterlogged spots.

Once a traditional “heal-all” herb, now best enjoyed for wildlife value and beauty. (We don’t offer medical claims.)
