Salsify (Tragopogon porrifolius) - Wildlife-Friendly Meadow (Peat-Free Super Plugs & 9cm Pots)

Known as Oyster Plant for its traditional edible root, Tragopogon porrifolius is brilliant in sunny, well-drained meadows, banks and dry borders. In year one it forms a neat rosette; in year two it sends up slender stems topped with violet-purple, open daisies that offer easy access to pollinators - especially solitary bees and hoverflies - just when many spring flowers are fading. Leave some architectural seedheads to stand into late summer; they catch the light and feed the garden’s sense of wild.

Tough and low-care, salsify thrives on chalk, sandy or gravelly soils, copes with drought, and will self-seed modestly to keep the display going. Cut spent stems if you want to reduce seedlings, or let a few drift for a natural look.

Planting & care:

• Position: Full sun; well-drained soil (chalk/limestone, sandy or ordinary garden soil).

• Spacing: Plant 25-30 cm apart; water to establish then keep on the dry side.

• Aftercare: Deadhead to limit seeding or leave some heads for structure and birds.

• Kitchen honesty: If you want edible roots, lift in autumn of year one; letting plants flower for wildlife can make roots woody - grow extra clumps so you can do both.

Status & truth note:
Ancient naturalised in Britain (not a strict native), but genuinely useful for pollinators thanks to its open, morning-blooming flowers. Our plants are peat-free and pesticide-free.
