Ragged Robin brings a soft, natural look to damp ground: slender stems carry clouds of shredded-petal pink flowers that float above grasses through late spring into early summer. A favourite in wet meadows and marshy hollows, it’s superb for wildlife - its open, accessible blooms feed bumblebees, solitary bees, hoverflies and day-flying moths right as the season gets going.
Where it thrives
Full sun to light dapple
Moist to wet, humus-rich soils (clay/loam ideal)
Pond edge/bog garden: plant in ground that stays moist with the crown at/just above soil level; do not submerge
Planting & care
Space 30-40 cm apart. Keep evenly moist in the first season; water in dry spells. Deadhead to extend flowering, or leave some seed for gentle self-seeding and a natural drift. Cut back in autumn or leave stems for winter structure and insects. In very dry gardens, enrich with leaf-mould and mulch to conserve moisture.
Name note:
flos-cuculi means “flower of the cuckoo”, nodding to its bloom time as cuckoos called across meadows.
Joel says…
“For wildlife ponds and damp borders that need a soft, natural feel, Ragged Robin is spot on. Plant it in the sunny margin, keep the soil moist, and let a few seedlings knit into a meadowy tapestry. As always, peat-free and raring to go.”
