A soft and subtle beauty by day - and a secret star by night. Night-flowering Catchfly opens its pale-pink, delicately scented blooms as the light fades, releasing a gentle perfume that draws in moths and other night-flying pollinators. In a wildlife garden, it’s a bridge between dusk and dawn, feeding those creatures that work the night shift while most of us sleep.
Native and annual-to-short-lived perennial, Silene noctiflora is perfect for sunny, free-draining spots, meadows, or the edge of a wildlife border. Its softly hairy stems and calyx give it a silvery sheen, glowing faintly in moonlight - a wonderful complement to evening primrose and white campion.
Where it thrives
Light: Full sun
Soil: Moderately fertile, free-draining
Setting: Meadows, gravel gardens, wildlife borders, sunny edges
Planting & Care
Plant super-plugs in groups for a natural effect. Allow some to set seed and self-sow each year; once established, it’ll return reliably. Avoid over-fertilising - this wildflower prefers lean soil and open conditions.
Wildlife Value
A vital nectar source for night-flying moths, especially the Silver Y and other dusk pollinators. Flowers also attract solitary bees early in the morning as they reopen with the first light.
Joel says…
“Proof that the garden doesn’t sleep when we do. Night-flowering Catchfly glows at twilight, feeding the unsung heroes of pollination - the moths. A little moonlight magic, no batteries required.”
