Lesser Spearwort (Ranunculus flammula) is a delicate pond-edge wildflower, producing bright yellow buttercup-like blooms from June to September. Its narrow spear-shaped leaves and low, sprawling habit make it a cheerful addition to damp soils, stream edges, or natural pond margins.

Flowering over a long season, it provides valuable nectar for bees, hoverflies, and beetles, while offering shelter among its foliage for amphibians and invertebrates.

Lesser Spearwort (Ranunculus flammula) is a charming member of the buttercup family, thriving in damp meadows, marshes, and pond edges. With its dainty yellow blooms set against slim, spear-like leaves, it flowers prolifically from June through September, brightening wetland areas throughout the summer.

This native plant plays a valuable role in the pond-edge ecosystem. Its long flowering season supports pollinators such as bees, hoverflies, and beetles, while its spreading foliage provides shelter for amphibians, aquatic insects, and other small wildlife. Its growth habit helps stabilise damp soils, making it useful for naturalising the margins of ponds, streams, or bog gardens.

While a wonderful addition to wildlife ponds and wetland gardens, Lesser Spearwort is vigorous in the right conditions and is not recommended for very small ponds or barrel ponds, where it can quickly dominate. In larger spaces, however, it creates a lively, natural effect and contributes greatly to biodiversity.
