Why Wild Your Garden?From £2.40
Greater Knapweed (Centaurea scabiosa) is one of Britain’s most charismatic meadow flowers, with bold, thistle-like blooms in rich purple that rise above grass and other wildflowers. Flowering from June through September, it provides a long-lasting display and one of the most important nectar sources for a wide range of pollinators.
This hardy perennial is especially loved by butterflies - including the Marbled White, Meadow Brown, and Painted Lady - as well as bees, hoverflies, and beetles. Its flowers are rich in nectar, while its seeds provide food for finches and other seed-eating birds later in the season, making it a true keystone species in wildflower meadows.
Culturally, knapweeds were once valued in traditional remedies (its Latin name “scabiosa” relates to treatments for skin conditions), and they remain much-loved in British folklore as symbols of meadows and midsummer abundance. Unlike true thistles, Greater Knapweed carries no spines, making it as gardener-friendly as it is wildlife-friendly.
Thriving in sunny, well-drained soils, it is a superb choice for wildflower meadows, verges, cottage-style gardens, or naturalistic borders. Over time, it will self-seed to create drifts of colour and activity.
🪴 Our Greater Knapweed is grown in peat-free super plugs and 9cm pots, strong and well-rooted for quick establishment and long-term flowering.
