Overview
Additional Info

Wild and generous in spirit, Chelidonium majus - the Greater Celandine - is a bold native wildflower often found near old walls, hedges and woodland edges. Its bright yellow blooms appear from spring into late summer, offering long-lasting nectar to hoverflies and bees, while its finely divided leaves create soft texture in wilder planting schemes.

Though sometimes misunderstood as a weed, it’s actually a sign of ecological health - thriving in those rich, semi-shaded spots where life overlaps. Its sap and roots have long fascinated herbalists, while its flowers still draw the quiet company of pollinators. Brett Westwood once noted that a rare ladybird species favours this plant, proof of its ongoing importance to our smaller, specialist insects.

Why it matters

Greater Celandine bridges wild and cultivated ground - a natural companion for pollinators that live along hedgerows and garden edges. By keeping it in its place, not eradicating it, you’re supporting biodiversity in microhabitats where even the smallest creatures depend on balance.

Where it thrives

Light: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Moist but well-drained, fertile
Setting: Hedgerows, walls, shady borders, wildlife edges

Joel says…

“Greater Celandine’s one of those plants that tells you a space is alive. It’s tough, long-flowering, and even supports specific insects that rely on it — a reminder that every part of a garden has a purpose.”

Folklore / Name Notes

The name Chelidonium comes from the Greek chelidōn, meaning “swallow,” because its flowering was said to coincide with the return of swallows in spring. In folklore, its orange sap was thought to heal eye ailments and “clear the sight” - perhaps poetically true in how it helps us see beauty in the overlooked.
