Additional Info

Lesser Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) is a hardy perennial wildflower that plays a starring role in British meadows and grasslands. Its distinctive purple, thistle-like flowers appear from June to September, creating one of the longest flowering seasons of any native wildflower.

Ecologically, it is a keystone nectar plant. Few species match its value for pollinators: butterflies such as Meadow Brown, Marbled White, Painted Lady, and Gatekeeper visit in abundance, alongside bees, hoverflies, and beetles. Its late-season blooms are particularly important for sustaining pollinators into early autumn. After flowering, its seed heads provide winter food for finches and other birds.

Culturally, knapweeds were used in traditional remedies, and in folklore they were sometimes linked to love divination - unmarried women would place the flower under their pillows to dream of future partners. Today, they remain symbols of the resilience and beauty of the traditional meadow.

Adaptable and easy to grow, Lesser Knapweed thrives in sunny, well-drained soils but will tolerate a range of conditions. It naturalises beautifully in meadows, verges, or wildlife-friendly borders, where it brings both bold colour and enormous biodiversity value.

🪴 Our Lesser Knapweed is grown in peat-free super plugs and 9cm pots, strong and well-rooted for quick establishment and reliable flowering.

Joel says...
“Lesser Knapweed is one of my go-to meadow plants. The sheer number of butterflies and bees you’ll see on it is incredible - it’s a real wildlife magnet. It’s tough, reliable, and keeps flowering for months. And of course, these are peat-free and ready to thrive.”
