If you’re looking for a robust native that earns its place in both a wild patch and a kitchen garden, Alexanders (Smyrnium olusatrum) is the one to plant.
This tall, early-flowering biennial thrives in coastal areas, woodland edges, and hedgerows - making it a versatile choice for creating layered, wildlife-friendly structure. Its glossy, parsley-like foliage and tall umbel flowers provide excellent cover for insects and amphibians, while its abundant nectar supports some of the earliest pollinators of the season - including hoverflies, beetles, bees and solitary wasps.
Alexanders is also a little-known wild edible! Almost all parts of the plant are edible (though not to be confused with similar-looking species - identification experience is key). The stems can be blanched like asparagus, the leaves added to salads, and the seeds used as a pepper substitute.
More info below:
Our Alexanders are grown in large super plug format using completely peat-free compost. These chunky plugs offer far better establishment than the tiny plugs sold elsewhere - and choosing peat-free helps protect irreplaceable peatland habitats and the rare species they support. Your garden gains, and so does the planet.
Super Plug Packs - Sold in multiples of 8.
Choose our Super Plug Bespoke Pack to mix up to 4 species in a single 16-pack or greater.
If you need tailored planting advice or are unsure whether Alexanders is right for your soil or location, Joel offers free personalised guidance for all Wild Your Garden customers.
“I love this plant - not just for its early pollinator support, but because it brings a sense of edge-of-woodland drama wherever you put it. You’ll be surprised how many creatures use it - and you might end up nibbling a stem or two yourself!”
