Additional Info

A classic UK native wildflower with large sky-blue to violet blooms that light up from early summer into autumn. Meadow Cranesbill forms a clump of divided foliage and upright flowering stems - typically 60 to 90 cm - perfect for sunny borders, wildflower meadows, orchard edges and the dry pond rim (it’s not aquatic). The open flowers are superb for bumblebees, solitary bees and hoverflies, and the prominent seed beaks (“cranes’ bills”) ripen to feed small birds and add autumn structure. Easy, resilient and long-lived in peat-free, mineral soils; will gently self-seed into welcoming gaps.

Native status: UK native; high wildlife value in sunny, unfussy ground.

Where it thrives
Light: Full sun to light/partial shade (best flowering in sun)
Soil: Free-draining to moderately moist mineral loam; tolerates lime; dislikes waterlogging
Setting: Dry pond rim/path edges, cottage borders, meadow plantings

Planting & care

  • Plant into peat-free loam; water to establish, then keep on the dry side (avoid constant wet)

  • Deadhead to extend bloom, or let late flowers seed for naturalised drifts

  • Trim after first flush (light shear) to tidy and prompt fresh foliage

  • Divide mature clumps every 3-4 years in spring or early autumn to refresh and spread

  • No pesticides; avoid rich, high-salt feeds (flowers best on leaner soils)

Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only - do not ingest. Low risk to handle; wear gloves if you have very sensitive skin. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.

Truth-first wildlife note:
An excellent nectar/pollen plant for sunny sites and a seed source later in the season. While not a wet-margin species, it partners perfectly with native damp-ground pollinators nearby to keep forage continuous.

Joel saysâ€Ķ
“Think big, true-blue flowers on easy, dry ground. Full sun, lean soil, light shear after the first show - and let a few seed for a natural repeat next year.”
