The classic Meadow Buttercup - glowing gold against summer grass, shimmering in the breeze, and carrying the spirit of old hay meadows into modern gardens. This native perennial brings height and light to wildlife lawns, orchard floors, and wildflower patches, with bright cup-shaped blooms that dance above the sward from May to July.
Unlike the creeping lawn buttercup, Ranunculus acris grows upright and elegant, often topping 60 cm. It blends beautifully among grasses, oxeye daisies, and red clover, creating that soft, living tapestry that hums with bees and hoverflies on warm afternoons.
Where it thrives
Light: Full sun or light shade
Soil: Moist, fertile soil preferred but adaptable once established
Setting: Wildflower meadows, orchard grass, pond margins, wildlife lawns
Planting & Care
Plant super-plugs in groups of five or more for natural drifts. Water well until established, then allow to grow freely with other meadow species. Mow or scythe in late summer once seed has dropped to encourage next year’s bloom.
Wildlife Value
A vital nectar and pollen source for solitary bees, hoverflies, and early butterflies. The dense foliage provides shelter for grasshoppers, beetles, and other meadow life - feeding the chain that supports birds and hedgehogs.
Joel says…
“If you remember holding a buttercup under your chin, this is that one - the proper meadow native, not the lawn invader. A little patch of golden nostalgia that still does real work for wildlife.”
