A shade-loving aroid with striking marbled leaves that appear through autumn & winter and hold into spring. In late spring it produces pale hooded spathes followed by vivid orange-red berry spikes in summer. Ideal for the pond collar, damp borders and woodland edge (it’s not aquatic). Forms clumps from tubers and can self-seed in happy sites, giving a naturalised look under shrubs and along shady paths. Foliage typically 30-45 cm; flower/seed stems to 45-60 cm.
Native status: Non-native/naturalised in the UK (garden-safe, not invasive when managed).
Where it thrives
Light: Partial to full shade (tolerates bright morning sun if soil stays moist)
Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / damp border / woodland edge; moist, humus-rich mineral loam; do not submerge
Setting: Under shrubs and trees, shady path-edges, between stones at the dry rim; pair with ferns, sedges and wood anemones
Planting & care
Plant tubers/crowns into peat-free loam improved with leaf-mould; mulch yearly to lock in moisture
Water to establish; keep evenly moist in dry spells for best leaf quality
Remove spent berry spikes if you don’t want spread; lift unwanted seedlings while young
Divide clumps when dormant (late summer/autumn); avoid root disturbance while in full leaf
Safety (important & honest):
Toxic if ingested - especially the berries. Sap may irritate skin/eyes; wear gloves. Keep away from children and pets. Do not compost berries where pets/wildlife can access. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.
Truth-first wildlife note:
Not a nectar powerhouse, but the scented spathes attract pollinating flies, and the evergreen/mid-winter leaves give low shelter for amphibians and invertebrates at the warm rim. Can self-seed in damp shade; manage by removing berry spikes in small gardens. Prefer a native equivalent? Consider Arum maculatum (also toxic).
Joel says…
“Use Italian arum to light up winter shade at the pond collar. Tuck it under shrubs, mulch well, and snip berry spikes if you want a tighter colony.”
