Holly (Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C. van Tol’) – Wildlife-Friendly Self-Fertile Evergreen

Holly (Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C. van Tol’) is one of the best berry producers for garden wildlife — a rare self-fertile holly, meaning it reliably bears loads of bright red berries even without a nearby male pollinator.

Unlike many hollies, ‘J.C. van Tol’ has smooth-edged, almost spineless leaves, making it easier to handle while still providing dense, glossy evergreen cover for nesting birds and shelter for small mammals.

Joel says: “‘J.C. van Tol’ is my top pick for heavy holly berries — self-fertile, glossy, and safe cover for birds all year round. Smooth leaves too, so easy to manage.” Supplied in a 7 litre container.

Hardy, tidy and very low maintenance, it grows naturally upright to about 3–5 metres tall if left unpruned, but responds well to clipping for hedges or formal shapes. Its heavy crops of berries are a winter feast for blackbirds, thrushes and other garden birds.
