Hop (Humulus lupulus) is a fast-growing native climber with exceptional value for wildlife, particularly butterflies and insects that rely on it as a food plant.
Best known as the larval food plant for the Comma butterfly, hop supports the full life cycle of this beautiful species - from egg to caterpillar to adult. Its lush, climbing growth also provides shelter for insects and birds, while the small green flowers are visited by pollinators in summer.
Naturally found along hedgerows, woodland edges and riverbanks, hop thrives when given space to climb through shrubs, fences or trellises. It is a vigorous plant that dies back in winter and regrows strongly each spring, making it ideal for wildlife-friendly gardens where plants are allowed to follow natural rhythms.
A true native climber that plays a vital role in supporting butterflies and restoring natural food webs.
