A statuesque UK native with clouds of soft pink flower heads that burst into life from late summer into early autumn - right when nectar can run short. Eupatorium cannabinum forms bold clumps of upright, red-tinted stems and divided leaves, typically 1-1.5 m tall (shorter on lean sites). Superb at the pond collar, in damp meadows or sunny/wildlife borders (it’s not aquatic). Long-lived, easy, and a brilliant bridge between high summer and autumn for bees and butterflies.
Where it thrives
Light: Full sun to light/partial shade
Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / damp border / meadow edge; moist but free-draining mineral loam; tolerates clay; do not submerge
Soil: Neutral to alkaline preferred; peat-free
Planting & care
Plant into peat-free loam; mulch annually with leaf-mould/composted bark to hold moisture
Water to establish and in dry spells
Stake in windy/exposed sites (one ring early in the season)
Deadhead or leave seed: trim for tidy borders, or let heads brown for seed and winter structure
Divide every 3-4 years in spring to refresh clumps or share
Avoid high-salt feeds and all pesticides
Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only - do not ingest. Low handling risk; wash hands after gardening. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.
Truth-first wildlife note:
One of the best late-season nectar plants for bees, hoverflies and butterflies (including Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Peacocks). Hollow stems and sturdy clumps give overwintering refuge for insects - cut back in late winter after wildlife has finished with them.
Joel says…
“Think billowing pink clouds right when pollinators need them most. Put it on the moist collar, mulch once a year, and let a few seedheads stand for winter life.”
