Fritillaria uva-vulpis (Fox’s Grape Fritillary) - Graceful Spring Bulb for Damp Borders & Naturalised Meadows

Fox's Grape Fritillary (Fritillaria uva-vulpis) is an unusual spring-flowering bulb with elegant nodding bells of deep plum-purple to brown, beautifully edged with golden yellow.

Ideal for naturalistic borders, meadow-style planting and woodland edges, its accessible flowers can provide useful additional spring forage for visiting insects. A distinctive non-native ornamental that works beautifully alongside wildlife-focused planting.

Joel says…
“Don't plant these in a regimented block. Their dark, nodding flowers look much more natural appearing between grasses and other spring plants, where those yellow-edged bells really stand out.”

Overview
Additional Info

The Fox's Grape Fritillary (Fritillaria uva-vulpis) is a wonderfully distinctive spring bulb, producing slender stems topped with nodding, bell-shaped flowers in rich plum-brown to deep purple, each dramatically edged and tipped with golden yellow.

More understated than some spring bulbs, its unusual colouring makes it particularly effective woven through naturalistic borders, meadow-style planting, woodland edges and amongst grasses and other spring-flowering plants.

Originally from western Asia, Fritillaria uva-vulpis is not a British native, but its accessible spring flowers and ability to sit comfortably within naturalistic planting make it a useful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.

Wildlife value

The nodding flowers provide nectar and pollen for visiting spring insects, including bees.

As a non-native species, we wouldn't place Fox's Grape Fritillary in the same ecological category as native plants such as Snake's-head Fritillary or English Bluebell. Instead, we include it as one of our carefully chosen ornamentals: a beautiful plant with accessible flowers that can provide useful additional spring forage within a garden already rich in native planting.

Planting & care

Position: Full sun or partial shade.

Soil: Moist but well-drained soil. Avoid ground that remains permanently waterlogged or becomes excessively dry during spring growth.

Planting depth: Approximately 8-10cm deep.

Spacing: Approximately 8-10cm apart, or plant informally amongst existing vegetation for a more natural appearance.

Height: Approximately 20-30cm.

Flowering: Usually April-May.

Aftercare: Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally after flowering so that energy can return to the bulb for the following year's growth.

In suitable conditions, plants can return reliably and gradually form attractive groups.

What's in a name?

The wonderfully memorable botanical name uva-vulpis essentially refers to “fox's grape” - which is also responsible for the plant's common name, Fox's Grape Fritillary.

Its dusky hanging bells certainly have an unusual grape-like quality, although we'd strongly recommend admiring rather than tasting them!

SAFETY NOTE

Fritillaria bulbs and other parts of the plant should not be eaten. Grow as an ornamental and wildlife-friendly garden plant, and keep bulbs away from children and pets likely to ingest them.

Why Wild Your Garden?

We carefully select bulbs that earn their place in a wildlife-friendly garden - prioritising native and naturalised species where ecological relationships matter most, alongside carefully chosen ornamentals that provide useful additional forage.

Orders are hand-picked for quality and packed in paper wherever suitable, with breathable net packaging used where necessary to keep bulbs in the best possible condition.

We work with specialist bulb growers and suppliers, including long-established local growers.
