Field Maple ‘Acer campestre’ – Bare Root

The field maple is a beautiful tree, supporting much wildlife whilst also resisting air pollution. Growing up to 20m in height and living for up to 350 years, these are a strong, stable addition to any garden, providing flowers and a beauty of colour to watch in autumn. The Tree is very shade-tolerant during the initial stages of its life, but it has higher light requirements during its seed-bearing years. It exhibits rapid growth initially, but is eventually overtaken and replaced by other trees as a forest matures. It is most commonly found on neutral to alkaline soils. Purchase this as part of a pack of 10, 50 or 100 bare root trees.  All specimens will be 2 year old plants, around 40-60cm tall. 60cm spiral guards and 90cm bamboo canes are recommended for each plants to protect from rabbit damage. Can be planted as individual trees or used to create wildlife friendly hedging.  We recommend 5 per square metre if you are looking to create hedging.

Additional Info

All species in a wildlife hedge can be cut back or “Coppiced” without harm. In the 1st year after establishment the hedge can be cut back to stimulate growth of the hedge from the base thereafter cut every 2-3 years. If the weather is unsuitable for planting or receiving the hedging, dig a hole and bury the roots of the bunched plants, they can be held like that till planting. After planting it is advantageous to mulch the hedge with lawn mowing or leaf mould to suppress weeds and also be done with plastic or carpet cuts and covered with soil.
