Joel says…

“Elder is one of those plants that wildlife simply expects to be there. When it flowers, insects arrive in numbers. When it fruits, birds strip it fast. And when everything else is struggling, it still gives shelter. If you want one native plant that does a bit of everything, Elder is hard to beat.”

Additional Info

Elder is one of Britain’s most important native plants - ecologically, culturally and practically.

Sambucus nigra supports more species than almost any other native shrub or small tree. Its large, frothy flower heads provide abundant nectar and pollen for insects in early summer, while its leaves are used by moth caterpillars and other invertebrates throughout the season.

Later in the year, the deep purple elderberries become a vital food source for birds and mammals, often coinciding with the time when natural food begins to thin out. Dense growth offers shelter, nesting opportunities and protection, while fallen leaves enrich the soil beneath.

Supplied in a 9 litre pot, this Elder is already well established - ideal for gardeners who want immediate structure and long-term wildlife value from day one.

Why Elder matters

Elder is a keystone species in British landscapes:

• abundant nectar and pollen for insects
• larval food for moth caterpillars
• berries for birds and mammals
• dense shelter for nesting and roosting
• strong cultural and seasonal value

Few native plants give so much, to so many, for so long.

Why a 9 litre pot?

Elder is fast-growing and naturally generous. Supplied in a 9 litre pot, it establishes quickly, copes better with variable weather, and provides earlier habitat value than smaller plants.

This size is ideal where you want:
• quicker shelter and structure
• reliable flowering and fruiting
• resilience in the first few years

Where to plant

Elder is remarkably adaptable.

It thrives in:
• sun or partial shade
• most soil types, including heavier soils
• hedgerows, boundaries and wild corners
• larger gardens, orchards and rewilded spaces

It can be grown as a large shrub or trained into a small tree, and responds well to pruning if size needs managing.
