Few summer sights are as joyful as swallows skimming low over fields and gardens - yet these iconic birds are quietly struggling as traditional nesting sites disappear and suitable nesting mud becomes harder to find, especially during increasingly dry springs.
Our Swallow Nest provides a ready-made, wildlife-friendly nesting cup based closely on the size and shape of natural swallow nests. When fitted in a suitable location, swallows will readily adopt these cups, saving precious energy during the breeding season and reducing their reliance on scarce mud supplies.
The nest cup is made from a durable moulded resin / concrete / terracotta mix, complete with a drainage hole, and is mounted on an attractive 100% recycled plastic backing plate. Once installed, it requires no maintenance and is designed to last for many years.
These nest cups are ideal for use in barns, stables, garages, sheds, archways and outbuildings - anywhere swallows already investigate or traditionally nested before modern building practices shut them out. Fitting a nest cup helps give swallows back what we’ve gradually taken away.
Swallows are sociable birds, but nest cups should be spaced thoughtfully. We recommend placing them at least 1 metre apart, with at least 6cm of clear space above the cup, and ensuring constant access throughout the breeding season.
Installation is simple: the nest cup slots over two screws, with an additional fixing hole at the base for stability. It comes ready to fit, requires no painting, and can be easily removed for cleaning after the breeding season if needed.
