Thoughtfully designed for longevity, warmth and minimal disturbance, the Eco Kent Bat Box offers a robust, low-maintenance roost for some of the UK’s most widespread - yet vulnerable - bat species.
Based on the proven Kent bat box design, this enhanced version features a weatherproof outer shell made from 100% recycled plastic, protecting the internal wooden roost and dramatically extending the life of the box. By shielding the timber from driving rain, temperature extremes and repeated wet/dry cycles, the outer casing helps maintain a more stable internal environment - something bats actively seek when choosing a roost.
Inside, the roosting chambers are formed from rough-sawn FSC® certified UK-grown spruce, providing excellent grip for bats as they crawl into position. The timber is sourced from sustainably managed woodland and processed close to the maker’s workshop, keeping transport miles low and ensuring responsible material choices throughout.
Two narrow crevice slots - each approximately 18mm wide - make this box especially suitable for crevice-roosting species such as Common and Soprano Pipistrelles, the UK’s smallest and most widespread bats. The open base design allows droppings to fall clear naturally, making the box self-cleaning and maintenance-free.
This is a serious conservation tool, designed for people who want to support bats properly - not just hang a token box and hope for the best.
All UK bats and their roosts are legally protected, yet suitable roosting sites are disappearing rapidly due to building renovations, tree loss and the sealing of traditional crevices.
Bat boxes like this provide safe, stable alternatives, especially in gardens, farmland edges, churchyards and near water where bats already feed. While bats may take time to discover and adopt new roosts, well-sited boxes can remain valuable for decades.
Patience is key - but when bats do move in, they often return year after year.
Mount on a building or mature tree
Position as high as possible, ideally 4–6 metres up
Choose a sunny but sheltered location
Avoid artificial lighting nearby
For best results, install multiple boxes facing different directions to offer varied temperature options
Signs of occupation include droppings beneath the box, staining around the lower edges, and chittering sounds on warm evenings.
⚠️ Important:
All bats and bat roosts are protected by law. A bat box should only be opened or inspected by a licensed bat worker.
Chosen with guidance from Joel Ashton, this Eco Kent Bat Box reflects a practical, evidence-led approach to wildlife support - prioritising durability, correct design and long-term habitat value over novelty.
It’s a box designed to quietly do its job, year after year.
