Dog’s-Tooth Violet (Erythronium dens-canis) - Spring Woodland Bulbs for Bees & Wildlife

Bring the spring woodland floor to life with Erythronium dens-canis (Dog’s-Tooth Violet), a beautiful European species bulb with nodding pink to mauve flowers, dramatically swept-back petals and wonderfully mottled foliage.

Ideal beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, it thrives in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil and can gradually establish into beautiful woodland groups.

Joel says: “Erythroniums are perfect for that layer of planting beneath deciduous trees where spring light reaches the ground before the canopy fills out. The mottled leaves are almost as beautiful as the flowers - plant them naturally and give them somewhere they can remain undisturbed.”

🪴 Supplied as quality dormant bulbs ready for autumn planting. Plant promptly on arrival and do not allow the bulbs to dry out.

Overview
Additional Info

Erythronium dens-canis, commonly known as the Dog’s-Tooth Violet, is a beautiful spring-flowering woodland bulb with elegant nodding flowers held above some of the most distinctive foliage of any bulb in our range.

Each flower carries swept-back pink to mauve petals, often revealing contrasting yellow and reddish-brown markings towards the centre. Beneath them sit broad green leaves beautifully mottled with brown or purple, meaning the plant is ornamental even before you properly notice the flowers. The curious common name comes from the elongated, tooth-like shape of the bulb.

Growing naturally in parts of Europe, Erythronium dens-canis is not native to Britain, but is wonderfully suited to naturalistic planting beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, where spring light reaches the woodland floor before the canopy closes overhead.

Given the right conditions and allowed to remain undisturbed, plants can gradually form attractive colonies - perfect for adding another layer to a wildlife-friendly woodland garden. The species is typically around 10-25cm tall.

Wildlife value

The spring flowers of Erythronium dens-canis add to the succession of flowering plants available as insects become increasingly active after winter.

For a wildlife garden, we see Dog's-Tooth Violet primarily as a carefully chosen supplementary spring flower, rather than a replacement for native woodland flora.

Plant it amongst native primroses and other valuable spring plants and alongside suitable naturalising bulbs to help create a garden in which flowering opportunities continue rather than arriving in one enormous short-lived flush.

Our approach remains: native where ecological relationships matter most; carefully chosen ornamentals where they genuinely provide useful additional forage.

Planting & care

Position: Partial or dappled shade. Beneath deciduous trees and shrubs or at a woodland edge is ideal.

Soil: Fertile, humus-rich and well-drained but moisture-retentive soil. Erythronium dens-canis dislikes becoming excessively dry while actively growing.

Planting depth: Approximately 10cm deep.

Spacing: Approximately 10-15cm apart, preferably in informal groups rather than regimented rows.

Height: Approximately 10-25cm.

Flowering period: Spring, generally around March–April depending on location and seasonal conditions.

Aftercare: Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally after flowering so the bulb can replenish its reserves.

IMPORTANT - DON'T LET THE BULBS DRY OUT

Unlike many familiar dry spring bulbs, Erythronium bulbs are particularly vulnerable to drying out in storage.

Plant them promptly after arrival and avoid leaving the bulbs sitting for weeks in a warm, dry place. Until planted, they should be kept slightly moist rather than allowed to desiccate.

Once established, Dog's-Tooth Violets generally prefer to be left undisturbed.

Creating a spring woodland floor

This is where Erythronium dens-canis really earns its place.

Rather than planting isolated bulbs around the garden, establish them in small, irregular groups beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, allowing the flowers and mottled leaves to emerge naturally through the woodland floor.

Combine them with Cyclamen coum, Winter Aconites, Scilla bifolia, Crocus tommasinianus, snowdrops and native primroses and you begin to create a succession of colour stretching from the depths of winter well into spring.

Over time, established clumps can be divided after flowering, although Erythroniums generally dislike unnecessary disturbance.

SAFETY NOTE

Erythronium dens-canis is sold as an ornamental bulb and should not be eaten. Keep bulbs away from children and pets likely to ingest them, and consider wearing gloves when handling.
