Additional Info

A spectacular bog-edge perennial that flowers early spring with clusters of soft pink starry blooms (often before the leaves), then unfurls huge, round, scalloped leaves on tall stalks - like green umbrellas. Clumps broaden steadily from rhizomes and throw deep, cooling shade over the shallows, creating humid cover for amphibians and invertebrates. Best for larger wildlife ponds and bog gardens where it has room to show off. In leaf typically 1-1.5 m tall, flower stems 60–120 cm.
Native status: North American non-native; garden-safe in the UK when sited sensibly.

Where it thrives

  • Light: Sun to partial shade (best colour in sun if roots are wet)

  • Moisture/Zone: Bog edge / constantly damp collar; can toe into very shallow water but is not aquatic

  • Soil: Humus-rich mineral loam, moist to wet all season; neutral to slightly acid

  • Space: Allow 1.5–2 m diameter over time (it’s a big beast)

Planting & care

  • Plant crowns level with the soil, then mulch thickly with leaf-mould/composted bark each spring to lock in moisture

  • Keep consistently wet in summer; never let it bake dry

  • Remove old leaves in winter; divide clumps in early spring to contain or refresh

  • If planting near a lined pond, use under-liner and over-liner fleece with subsoil on shelves (Joel-style) to protect the liner and anchor the plant

  • No pesticides; avoid high-salt feeds

Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only - do not ingest. Low risk to handle; wear gloves if you have sensitive skin. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.

Truth-first wildlife note:
Provides early nectar/pollen on the spring flowers and excellent cool cover later, but as a non-native it has no UK larval-host role. Its size can dominate small ponds - choose it for medium–large spaces, and pair with UK natives (e.g., Meadowsweet, Water Mint, Purple Loosestrife) to maximise wildlife value.

Joel says…
“Think living parasols at the bog edge. Give Darmera wet feet and elbow-room, mulch every spring, and it’ll make shade and structure without fuss.”
