Cyclamen hederifolium - Autumn-Flowering Cyclamen for Bees, Woodland & Wildlife Gardens

Bring late-season colour beneath deciduous trees and shrubs with Cyclamen hederifolium (Ivy-Leaved Cyclamen), a hardy autumn-flowering cyclamen with delicate pink flowers followed by beautifully patterned foliage.

Ideal for woodland-style and wildlife-friendly planting, its late flowers provide useful supplementary forage as the abundance of summer blooms begins to decline.

Joel says: “This is one of those plants that can completely transform the ground beneath mature trees. Let it establish naturally and you can eventually get beautiful colonies of flowers in autumn, followed by that wonderful patterned foliage through winter.”

Additional Info

Cyclamen hederifolium, commonly known as Ivy-Leaved Cyclamen, is a beautiful hardy cyclamen that brings delicate pink flowers to woodland-style planting from late summer into autumn.

Its elegant swept-back flowers often emerge before the leaves, appearing seemingly from bare ground beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. As flowering continues, wonderfully patterned ivy-shaped foliage develops, creating an attractive carpet that can remain through winter before disappearing as the plant becomes dormant.

Given suitable conditions, Cyclamen hederifolium can gradually establish and self-seed, producing increasingly impressive colonies beneath trees, around shrubs and along woodland edges.

It is not native to Britain, but its autumn flowering period makes it an especially useful ornamental addition to a wildlife-friendly garden, extending flowering into a season when the great summer abundance of nectar and pollen is beginning to decline.

Wildlife value

The wildlife value of Cyclamen hederifolium lies particularly in its late flowering season.

Its flowers can provide supplementary forage for bees and other insects during late summer and autumn, helping to extend the succession of flowering plants available within the garden.

We wouldn't plant it instead of native autumn flowers, but alongside them it can contribute another source of nectar and pollen while also making excellent use of the otherwise difficult ground beneath deciduous trees and shrubs.

Together with earlier-flowering woodland plants, it can help create a garden in which the woodland floor isn't simply interesting for a few weeks in spring.

Our approach is simple: native where ecological relationships matter most; carefully chosen ornamentals where they genuinely provide useful additional forage.

Planting & care

Position: Partial or dappled shade is ideal, particularly beneath deciduous trees and shrubs.

Soil: Humus-rich, reasonably well-drained soil. Once established, Cyclamen hederifolium is well suited to the relatively dry conditions often found beneath trees during summer.

Planting depth: Plant tubers shallowly, with the top approximately 2-3cm below the soil surface.

Spacing: Approximately 10-15cm apart, preferably in loose, informal groups.

Height: Approximately 10-15cm.

Flowering period: Usually August to October, depending on location and conditions.

Aftercare: Allow the foliage to remain and die back naturally. Established tubers generally prefer to be left undisturbed.

A woodland floor that changes with the seasons

One of the loveliest uses for Cyclamen hederifolium is as part of a succession of plants beneath deciduous trees.

Its flowers arrive as summer begins to fade, followed by beautifully patterned foliage that provides interest through the colder months.

Rather than planting individual tubers in neat rows, place them in loose groups amongst tree roots, fallen leaves and other woodland-edge planting. In suitable conditions, established plants can self-seed and gradually develop into wonderfully informal colonies.

Pairing autumn-flowering Cyclamen hederifolium with winter and spring plants such as Cyclamen coum, Winter Aconites, snowdrops and native primroses can create a woodland floor that changes throughout the seasons rather than producing one brief burst of colour.

SAFETY NOTE

Cyclamen hederifolium is not edible. The tubers in particular contain compounds that can be harmful if eaten. Keep tubers and plants away from children and pets likely to ingest them, and wash hands after handling.
