Designed specifically for the UK’s smallest and most widespread bat species, this Crevice Bat Box provides a carefully engineered roost for pipistrelles - combining proven design, thermal stability, and long-term durability.
Many bats naturally roost in narrow crevices in trees, buildings and stonework. As modern buildings become increasingly sealed and mature trees are lost, these vital roosting spaces are disappearing. This crevice-style bat box recreates those tight, sheltered conditions in a form that bats recognise and readily use.
Constructed from precision-cut FSC® certified exterior-grade plywood, the box features two or three internal crevices, depending on the option chosen. Each crevice is carefully sized and designed to “run” at a slightly different temperature, allowing bats to move within the box to find their preferred microclimate.
To support this, the external surfaces are finished in black to absorb warmth, while internal ceramic heat sinks help stabilise temperature - warming up quickly in sunlight and cooling more slowly overnight. This combination creates a more consistent and bat-friendly internal environment than many standard bat boxes.
A grooved landing ladder continues from the base into the interior, making it easy for bats to enter, climb and roost securely. A narrow 17mm entrance slot allows bats access while deterring birds.
Available as either:
Double Crevice - suitable for small roosts or individual bats
Treble Crevice - offering approximately 50% more internal space, ideal for larger roosts or maternity use
Common and soprano pipistrelles are the bats most likely to use garden bat boxes - but they are also highly sensitive to temperature, draughts and disturbance.
By providing multiple crevices with different thermal characteristics, this box allows bats to regulate their body temperature naturally. This is particularly important during breeding, roosting and transitional seasons.
Bat boxes like this are most effective when seen as long-term habitat provision, not instant wildlife accessories. It may take time for bats to discover and adopt a new roost - patience is key.
Mount high on a tree, wall or building, ideally 3-5 metres above ground
Choose a sunny, sheltered position, facing south or south-east where possible
If space allows, install several boxes facing different directions to provide a range of conditions
Avoid bright artificial lighting nearby
Signs of use may include droppings beneath the box, staining near the entrance, or chittering sounds on warm evenings.
⚠️ Legal note:
All bats and bat roosts are protected by law. Bat boxes should only be opened or inspected by licensed individuals.
Selected for Wild Your Garden with guidance from Joel Ashton, this bat box reflects a practical, evidence-led approach to supporting bats - focusing on how they actually live, roost and respond to temperature, rather than decorative designs.
