Our Common Centaury is grown in 9cm format using completely peat-free compost. These pots offer far better establishment than the tiny plugs often sold elsewhere - and choosing peat-free helps protect the UK’s irreplaceable peatland habitats and the rare species they support. Grown in peat-free 9cm pots, our Common Centaury (Centaurium erythraea) is a dainty but determined British wildflower, known for its clusters of starry pink flowers that bloom from June to September. Found in dry grasslands, sandy soils, and coastal meadows, this low-growing beauty was once a favourite in traditional herbal remedies and is still treasured by pollinators today.
Its long flowering period provides nectar for a range of insects, especially butterflies, solitary bees, and hoverflies. A subtle but powerful addition to sunny wildflower borders or meadow-style plantings, Common Centaury thrives in low-nutrient soils and plays a valuable role in supporting biodiversity where more vigorous species might take over.
Joel says...
“Centaury is one of those plants that surprises you - quietly elegant, but so important. It loves the kind of dry, low-nutrient soil that other species struggle with, and once it's there, the pollinators find it. It's a classic case of ‘small but mighty’ - and of course, these are peat-free and thriving.”
