Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’ is a striking ornamental thistle with exceptional value for pollinating insects.
Its deep burgundy-red flower heads appear in early to mid-summer and are rich in nectar, attracting bees, butterflies and other pollinators in large numbers. Despite the word “thistle”, this is a well-behaved garden plant with a refined habit and far less spikiness than many people expect.
Native to parts of Europe, Cirsium rivulare thrives in moist but well-drained soil and is particularly well suited to wildlife borders, meadow-style planting and naturalistic gardens. Its tall stems and bold flowers add structure and colour while supporting a wide range of insects.
A brilliant example of how thistles can be beautiful, useful and wildlife-positive.
