Camassia quamash (Common Camas) - Wildlife-Friendly Meadow Bulbs for Bees & Pollinators

Bring beautiful blue spring colour to meadow-style and wildlife-friendly planting with Camassia quamash (Common Camas). Upright stems of star-shaped blue flowers rise above fresh green foliage and provide accessible flowers for visiting bees and other pollinators.

Particularly useful in moisture-retentive ground, Camassia is wonderful planted in informal groups through grass, naturalistic borders and beneath open deciduous trees.

Joel says: “Camassias are brilliant for bringing bulbs into those slightly damper parts of a garden. Plant them in loose groups through grass or naturalistic planting and those blue flower spikes can look absolutely beautiful in spring.”

Overview
Additional Info

Camassia quamash, commonly known as Common Camas or Quamash, is a beautiful spring-flowering bulb producing upright stems of star-shaped blue to violet-blue flowers above fresh green, strap-like foliage.

Native to western North America, Camassias naturally occur in seasonally moist meadows and grasslands. That makes Camassia quamash particularly useful in gardens where the soil is moisture-retentive in spring but not permanently waterlogged - conditions where some of our more familiar spring bulbs may be less happy.

Planted in loose groups and drifts, the slender blue flower spikes can weave wonderfully through meadow-style planting, informal borders and beneath open deciduous trees.

Wildlife value

The open, starry flowers of Camassia quamash are visited by bees and other pollinating insects, providing useful additional forage during the spring flowering season.

Although this is not a British native, its accessible flowers and suitability for naturalistic planting give it a worthwhile place in a wildlife-friendly garden alongside native plants.

We particularly like Camassias where their different growing requirements allow us to bring flowering bulbs into slightly damper areas of the garden, increasing the diversity of planting rather than simply adding another ornamental bulb to a conventional border.

As always, our approach is: native where ecological relationships matter most; carefully chosen ornamentals where they genuinely provide useful additional forage.

Planting & care

Position: Full sun or partial shade.

Soil: Fertile, moisture-retentive soil is ideal. Camassia quamash appreciates moisture while actively growing in spring but should not sit permanently waterlogged.

Planting depth: Plant approximately 10cm deep.

Spacing: Approximately 10–15cm apart, preferably in informal groups or drifts.

Height: Usually approximately 30–50cm, depending on conditions.

Flowering period: Usually April to May.

Aftercare: Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally after flowering so that the bulb can replenish its energy reserves for the following year.

Once established, Camassias are generally happiest when left relatively undisturbed.

For meadows and moisture-retentive ground

One of the things we particularly value about Camassia quamash is where it can be used.

Try planting it through meadow-style grass, around the sunnier edges of wildlife gardens, in moisture-retentive borders or beneath open deciduous trees.

Its upright flowers can emerge amongst lower vegetation rather than needing to occupy a bare bed of their own, making it especially attractive in relaxed, naturalistic planting.

Plant several together rather than dotting individual bulbs around the garden. Repeated loose groups can create a beautiful ribbon of blue through a larger planting area.

If planting through grass, allow the Camassia foliage to die back naturally before mowing or cutting the area.

SAFETY NOTE

Camassia quamash should be treated as an ornamental garden bulb and not eaten. Bulbs can be confused with other bulbous plants, some of which are highly toxic. Keep bulbs and plant material away from children and pets likely to ingest them, and wash hands after handling.
