Tiny gold button flowers over neat, bright green, spreading mats make Cotula coronopifolia a superb softener for the shallow pond rim and boggy edges. It creeps and roots at the nodes, stitching gaps between stones, trailing over basket rims, and keeping sightlines clear for a tidy, natural look. Blooming through late spring to summer, it’s especially handy in barrel ponds and small spaces where you want a low edge without bulk. Expect 3-8 cm in height with a wide but easy-to-guide spread when kept shallow and lightly trimmed. (This species is not UK-native; keep it to the rim/bog zone and don’t allow fragments into natural water.)

Where it thrives

  • Light: Full sun to light/partial shade (best flowering with some sun)

  • Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / very shallow shelf; crown at water level or with 0-2(-5) cm water over the soil; also happy in consistently damp ground just beyond the liner

  • Setting: Front-of-edge, rock crevices, basket rims; pairs beautifully with Myosotis, Brooklime, Creeping Jenny and low sedges

Planting & care

  • Plant in peat-free aquatic/bog compost (small mesh basket or directly into damp soil) and top-dress with washed grit at the rim

  • Trim runners lightly after flowering to keep a neat edge and steer spread

  • Peg down where you want it to root; lift stray bits where you don’t

  • Divide by lifting rooted sections in spring/summer and replanting as needed

  • In colder regions, give winter protection (sheltered site, extra grit/top mulch); if severely frosted, it often re-shoots from surviving pieces in spring

Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only - do not ingest. Wash hands after pond work. Keep plant fragments and soil out of natural watercourses; never release garden plants into the wild.

Truth-first wildlife note:
The small, open disc florets are accessible to hoverflies and tiny pollinators, but the real value is its low, knitted edge, creating warm, protected shallows for amphibians and emerging insects. Pair with single-flowered UK natives to boost nectar across the season.

Joel says…
“Think of Brass Buttons as the neat hem on your pond - bright, low and easy. Keep it very shallow, trim now and then, and let it lace the edges without stealing the view.”
