Striking red-veined leaves make Rumex sanguineus a superb foliage accent for damp pond collars and bog gardens. This UK-native forms neat clumps that bring rich texture and colour contrast at the water’s edge, giving low cover and cool shade for emerging amphibians and insects moving between land and water. Flowers are small and understated - the foliage is the star - so it’s ideal where you want a natural look with a touch of drama that doesn’t block sightlines. Expect roughly 30-60 cm tall, slowly expanding clumps; perfect in front/mid-edge with brighter bloomers behind.
Where it thrives
Light: Full sun to partial shade (best colour with a little sun; appreciates some shade in hot sites)
Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / bog - consistently moist to wet soil; not a submerged plant
Setting: Damp borders, gravelly pond rims, and between stones where moisture lingers
Planting & care
Plant in peat-free aquatic/bog compost or rich, moisture-retentive soil; mulch to hold moisture
Keep evenly damp - do not allow to dry out; a light grit top-dress helps around pond edges
Clip spent flower stems to keep energy in leaves and limit self-seeding (or leave a few for a wild look)
Divide every 2-3 years in spring to refresh clumps and share plants along the edge
Safety (important & honest):
Leaves contain oxalic acid (as with many docks/sorrels). Do not ingest; not sold as an edible. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin and wash hands after planting. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.
Truth-first wildlife note:
Not a nectar show - dock flowers are inconspicuous - but the foliage and clumping habit provide shelter, shade and edge cover, helping keep warm, shallow margins hospitable for amphibians and invertebrates. Pair with single-flowered natives for pollinator forage.
Joel says…
“Think of Bloodwort as your pond-edge ‘foil’ - those red veins set off blues and yellows beautifully, and the clump gives quiet, useful cover. Keep it moist, trim the stems, and let it cool the rim.”
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are ordering perennials between the months of October and March, including aquatic plants, please be aware that this is the dormant phase for perennials, so your plants may arrive showing potentially little or no top growth at this stage, or can in some cases still have some old leaves from last year showing also. Please don't worry, as this is all quite normal. Once the weather warms up in spring, you will start to see fresh growth and activity! If you ever have any concerns at all, please just message the team on enquiries@wildyourgarden.com and we'll always do our best to help.
