Allium christophii, or Star of Persia, produces enormous spherical flowerheads made from dozens of metallic violet-purple stars in late spring and early summer.
A spectacular species Allium for sunny borders and naturalistic planting, its open individual flowers provide useful additional forage for visiting insects. The architectural seedheads can remain attractive after flowering too.
Joel says…
“Christophii is one of those bulbs that gives you enormous impact without needing formal planting. Let the flowerheads rise through grasses and other perennials and leave the seedheads standing afterwards - they look fantastic.”

Allium christophii, commonly known as Star of Persia, is one of the most spectacular species Alliums for a sunny wildlife-friendly garden.
In late spring and early summer, sturdy stems carry enormous spherical flowerheads composed of dozens of metallic violet-purple, star-shaped flowers. Unlike the densely packed globes of many ornamental Alliums, the individual flowers are held on long radiating stems, creating an extraordinary open starburst effect that can reach around 20-25cm across.
Despite their size, the flowerheads have an airy quality that makes them particularly effective emerging through grasses and naturalistic perennial planting.
Native from Türkiye through parts of Central Asia to north-eastern Iran, this is a true species Allium rather than a modern hybrid or cultivar.
Those spectacular globes aren't single flowers: each is made up of numerous individual star-shaped blooms.
This provides visiting insects with many small flowers to investigate across each flowerhead, making Allium christophii a useful source of additional seasonal forage for bees and other flower-visiting insects.
It isn't native to Britain, so we wouldn't put it in the same ecological category as our native bulbs. Instead, we regard it as a particularly good example of a carefully selected ornamental species that combines considerable garden impact with accessible flowers for visiting insects.
Position: Full sun
Soil: Fertile but free-draining soil; avoid persistently wet or waterlogged ground
Planting depth: Approximately 10-15cm deep, or around 2-3 times the bulb's own depth
Spacing: Approximately 15-20cm apart
Height: Approximately 40-60cm
Flowering: Late spring to early summer, typically May-June
Aftercare: Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally after flowering so energy can return to the bulb.
Plant in loose groups amongst grasses, perennials and other naturalistic planting, where the enormous flowerheads can rise above their neighbours without the planting looking formal.
And don't be too quick with the secateurs: the architectural seedheads can remain attractive long after the purple flowers have finished, extending the plant's structural contribution to the garden.
The common name Star of Persia could hardly be more appropriate. Look closely at one of those huge spheres and you'll see that it is constructed from individual six-pointed stars, collectively producing the extraordinary globe.
You may also encounter the older botanical name Allium albopilosum, which Kew currently lists as a synonym.
Ornamental Alliums are members of the onion family. Bulbs are not intended for consumption and should be treated as ornamental garden plants.
Allium species can be harmful to dogs and cats if eaten, so keep bulbs and plant material away from pets likely to chew or ingest them.
We carefully select bulbs that earn their place in a wildlife-friendly garden — prioritising native and naturalised species where ecological relationships matter most, alongside carefully chosen ornamentals that provide useful additional forage.
Orders are hand-picked for quality and packed in paper wherever suitable, with breathable net packaging used where necessary to keep bulbs in the best possible condition.
We work with specialist bulb growers and suppliers, including long-established local growers.
